Monovettes are an essential component of modern blood collection systems and play a central role in diagnostics. These special tubes, often used in medical laboratories, allow for precise and safe blood collection as well as hassle-free sample preparation. Below you will learn more about the advantages and areas of application of Monovettes.

What are Monovettes?

Monovettes are special blood collection tubes designed for the collection and transport of blood samples. They consist of a plastic tube with an integrated plunger and a vacuum system that allows controlled blood collection. Monovettes are available in various designs, containing different additives such as EDTA, lithium heparin, or citrate, depending on the need, to prepare the blood sample for different analyses.

Advantages of Monovettes

Safe and easy to use: Monovettes are user-friendly and offer a high level of safety for medical personnel. The vacuum system ensures that blood collection is quick and precise, while minimizing the risk of contamination or sample loss.

Versatile: Monovettes are available in different sizes and with different additives, making them suitable for a variety of diagnostic tests. Whether for hematology, clinical chemistry, or coagulation diagnostics - there is a suitable Monovette for every application.

Quality and reliability: Monovettes ensure consistently high sample quality, which is crucial for accurate and reliable test results. Thanks to the standardized volume measurement, it is ensured that the sample volume always meets the analysis requirements.

Optimized sample preparation: The special design of the Monovettes enables efficient and safe sample preparation. The tubes can be directly centrifuged, which greatly simplifies and accelerates the sample processing process.

Areas of application of Monovettes

Monovettes are used in various medical fields, including:

Clinical chemistry: For the analysis of blood serum and plasma.

Hematology: For the examination of blood count parameters.

Coagulation diagnostics: For tests like INR or aPTT.

Immunology: For the examination of antibodies and antigens.

What materials are needed for a blood collection?

To perform a blood draw, additional work materials are needed. On the one hand, a tourniquet also known as a compression band, is necessary. The puncture site must be cleaned using a skin disinfectant . This is essential to ensure hygienic work. Otherwise, the puncture site can become infected as germs and bacteria enter the site.
To puncture the vein, a so-called butterfly, or Sarstedt Multifly® needle is needed. This is used for a single puncture, such as during a blood draw at the doctor's office. If patients are in the clinic and require multiple blood draws within a short period, a indwelling venous cannula is used. This is fixed with a cannula plaster . These come in various sizes and designs, also with safety mechanisms. The indwelling venous cannula can remain in the vein for several days.
To connect the Monovette to the butterfly, a multi adapter is attached to the Monovette and then to the butterfly. The adapter is standardized for all Monovettes. After a successful blood draw, the puncture site should be covered with a cotton swab and a adhesive plaster and pressed with the hands to prevent re-bleeding. A gauze bandage fixes both and can be removed one to two hours after the blood draw.

Monovettes are an indispensable tool in modern diagnostics, convincing with their precision, safety, and versatility. They offer optimal conditions for blood collection and processing, making them a standard in many laboratories worldwide.
